GERMAN VOCABULARY
If German is not your first language,
understanding the flat figure Editors' catalogues can be a bit
daunting. This vocabulary, originally created by Ed Humphreys, should help.
German has a very formal grammar, and word
endings may well differ from those listed here. The German
symbol ß may be replaced with a double s. The Umlaut (two dots) over the vowel
is the equivalent of writing
an e after that vowel. Hence, Österreich is the same as Oesterreich.
The catalogues also contain abbreviations, which
require a certain amount of educated guesswork to
interpret correctly.
A quick way of translating German into English is
to use Altavista
Babelfish. You simply paste the copy you need
to translate into a box and select the language you wish it to be translated
into. The translated text is far from perfect
but it will enable you to get a good sense of the meaning of the original.
Please post any corrections or additions to this vocabulary list in the Forum.
